Chapter Fourteen

March 6th

10:31 P.M.

Phoebe was gone.

Mouse frowned as he looked around the now empty living room. He’d just been in the bathroom grabbing a warm, wet towel to clean Phoebe up, so he knew she hadn’t been in there. If she’d gone to his bathroom, she would have had to pass the second bathroom and she hadn’t done that. The kitchen door was closed, and he might have thought she was in there, but the front door was slightly ajar.

She’d left.

Why?

Everything had been going perfectly. Dinner had been fun, asking one another get to know you questions, and then they’d made out which hadn’t been on his agenda for the night. Mouse hadn’t wanted to do anything that would make her feel pressured, but she’d been clear that it was what she wanted.

At least he’d thought she wanted it.

Phoebe had seemed happy, relaxed, had that floating down from an orgasm fueled high look in her eyes. How could things have changed in the sixty or so seconds he’d been gone?

What was going on?

He spun in a circle, examining the room as though the answers he sought might be hiding somewhere. Then his gaze landed on the coffee table. After taking Lolly to school, he’d spent most of the day working on trying to find leads on the men who had tried to abduct Lolly, then alternating to looking into the man who had been pulling Storm Gallagher’s strings.

That case was personal to Prey and his whole team specifically. Storm had had Dove Oswald and her now husband Isaac abducted and almost killed, then after he’d escaped, he’d abducted his sister Mackenzie. It was on a raid of his compound that Bear had found Mackenzie, weak and injured and imprisoned. After fighting for their lives, sparks had ignited between the pair and eventually they got together. Not before Storm abducted his sister and they found out that his plans of a utopia where there was no government, no money, and people lived off the land, were being used by someone to manipulate him. They just had no idea who that person—or persons—was.

His gaze narrowed as he stepped closer. Had Phoebe seen the picture of Storm? Was that why she ran?

No.

That made no sense.

How would she even know who the man was?

Storm had believed he would produce an heir who would usher in a new world, Phoebe was involved in family law. Had Storm sought legal advice?

If he had, it was unlikely to have been from Phoebe, but Dexter was a high flyer at one of the most prestigious family law firms in the country. It was conceivable that Storm had spoken to Dexter about getting legal custody of the baby he wanted to create.

But if that had happened, how would Phoebe know Storm?

Could Storm and whoever had been pulling his strings been involved in Lolly’s near kidnapping?

Could he have threatened or blackmailed Phoebe into being part of it?

No.

That was utterly crazy.

If Phoebe had run it was much more likely because she’d freaked because the two of them had made out.
